Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements. Lyrical dance is a dance style that blends elements of ballet and jazz dance. Lyrical dance is generally a little more fluid than ballet and also somewhat faster -- although not as rapidly executed as jazz dance.
Lyrical/Contemporary 1/2: Beginning and Advancing lyrical/contemporary dancers must have prior ballet experience and only with instructor evaluation and approval. Lyrical and Contemporary emphasizes strength and range of movement with song lyrics. Lyrical emphasizes control of motion and muscle engagement at varied speeds with ballet-centered movement. Students must be concurrently enrolled in ballet or with instructor approval.
Advanced Contemporary/Jazz (with instructor placement) Intermediate to Advanced lyrical and contemporary dancers, must have prior Lyrical, Contemporary, and Jazz experience. Contemporary builds upon skills learned in Ballet, Lyrical, and Jazz, with an emphasis on contemporary movement and increased range of motion, strength, balance, muscle control, and musicality. Students must be concurrently enrolled in ballet or with instructor approval.
